Burns Awareness Day

11 October 2023 is National Burns Awareness Day

Children are curious explorers, and while their inquisitive nature is a beautiful thing, it also comes with a need for extra vigilance when it comes to burn safety. Here are some essential tips to keep our kids safe and sound:

  1. Supervision is Key: Always keep a watchful eye on your children, especially around hot objects, stoves, fireplaces, or heaters.
  2. Hot Drinks Alert: Never leave hot beverages unattended, and make sure they’re out of reach.
  3. Safety Gates: Use safety gates to keep children away from stoves, ovens, and other cooking appliances.
  4. Teach Early: Educate your children about the dangers of fire, stoves, and hot surfaces from an early age.
  5. Cool Down First: Teach them that anything that looks hot should be considered off-limits until it cools down.
  6. Electric Outlet Covers: Ensure all electrical outlets are properly covered.
  7. Emergency Plan: Have a family emergency plan in case of accidents and teach children how to respond.
  8. First Aid Knowledge: Equip yourself with basic first-aid knowledge to handle minor burns and have a first-aid kit on hand.
  9. Matches and Lighters: Store matches and lighters out of reach and educate children about their dangers.
  10. Smoke Detectors: Check your smoke detectors regularly and teach children the importance of fire safety.

Let’s work together to create a safe environment for our little ones, ensuring they have the freedom to explore while keeping them protected from the hazards of burns.
