If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to tackle a sporting challenge and make a difference at the same time, why not give it a go? Whether it’s a half marathon, a cycling event, or something entirely unique, fundraising through sport is a fantastic way to support causes close to your heart.

Take Liz Halliwell and Rachel Brown, two dedicated staff nurses from the Burns and Plastics Aftercare Clinic at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, who recently completed the Manchester Half Marathon. They took on the 13.1-mile challenge not only to test themselves but also to raise awareness and vital funds for the Children’s Burns Foundation.

Running for a Cause

Liz and Rachel’s inspiration came from their work with young burn survivors. They see firsthand the difference the Children’s Burns Foundation makes in helping children recover and regain confidence after life-changing injuries. Their shared goal was to give back to the Foundation and ensure even more children benefit from its support. For Liz, the cause held a deeply personal meaning. Her own daughter experienced a burn injury, and she remembers the overwhelming support her family received during that challenging time. “The help we received was invaluable,” Liz shared. “The Children’s Burns Foundation offers this same support to so many families, and running the half marathon felt like a meaningful way to give back.”

Overcoming the Challenges of Training

Training for a sporting challenge can be tough, especially when life is already busy. For Liz and Rachel, finding time to train while working in a demanding healthcare environment was no small feat. “After a long day at the clinic, it wasn’t always easy to lace up our trainers,” Rachel admitted. “But knowing we were running for such an important cause kept us going.” Their dedication paid off as they crossed the finish line, cheered on by family, friends, and colleagues. Along the way, they raised awareness about burn injuries and the critical services offered by the Children’s Burns Foundation, which include therapeutic activities, rehabilitation programmes, and confidence-building workshops for young survivors.

Why Take on a Challenge?

Sporting challenges are not just about fitness—they’re about community, personal growth, and making a real difference. Liz and Rachel’s experience is proof that even the busiest schedules can accommodate a challenge with the right motivation and support.

By choosing to raise funds for the Children’s Burns Foundation, you’ll be helping children and their families rebuild their lives after burn injuries. The charity’s work goes far beyond physical recovery, offering support that helps young survivors thrive emotionally and socially.
