Why do burn injuries deserve special attention?
Burn injuries are among the most painful injuries a person can experience. Whether caused by hot liquids, fire, chemicals, friction, or radiation, burns cause lasting damage. The injured skin may need replacing, which can result in permanent changes to the structure of the skin and surrounding tissues. These scars can restrict growth and function, as well as make young people feel vulnerable among their peers. A burn injury is a life-changing event, not just for the individual but also for their families.
Leaving hospital: A daunting prospect
After surviving the trauma of the burn injury, young people and their families must also navigate the challenges of returning to everyday life. Many children and young people report being targeted by bullying or facing stares from others. Everyday activities, like entering a school playground, visiting a college canteen, or riding a bus, can become sources of anxiety.
At the Children’s Burns Foundation, we are dedicated to empowering young people. We help them find the courage and determination to recover and build a positive sense of identity.
